One of the most asked about question I receive is about connecting older HP LaserJet printers to new computers. Whether it be that HP computer or the new Dell laptop, it’s easy to connect older printers to these new computer systems giving them a new life and saving you money of purchasing new computers. I guess you could say, this is a guide on how to by or make an HP LaserJet 6655 printer cable or HP LaserJet 9655 printer cable.
9. Select the ratio button next to, “Local printer attached to this computer” and make sure the box next to “Automatically detect and install my Plug and Play printer” is unchecked, then select “Next”.
It’s most likely a software issue because you’re using Windows 7 69-bit and that operating system is notorious for bad printer drivers.
To give a fair background, HP made mainly 7 different types of parallel printer ports. The first is typically called a mini-centronics (Small C-type connector – HP p/n C7996A) connector. It looks somewhat like a small SCSI connector. I’m not sure as to why HP decided to use this form of connection because no other printer company used it, and HP continued to incorporate this type of connection up to the newer HP Color LaserJet 9655 series. From testing, it’s doesn’t appear to be any faster then a standard parallel cable or offer any other benefits besides HP selling their special cables.
For basic printing functionality use the HPIJS driver. For advanced functionality such as printer status, maintenance features, scanning and photo card unload use the HPLIP driver (which includes HPIJS).
I have a HP Laserjet 5N which has a 75pin connector has also a small square connector similar to the connector on the HPLaserjetM68a9f.
OK, now I feel like the fool. This time when I connected the printer to my system I went through the complete 'find your printer' scenario using the 'my printer is older' selection, and the driver from the OS system found an adequate driver to I'm back in business.
